Letter to parents from AR Chair, Evie Anastasiadou:

Hello everyone,

My name is Evie Anastasiadou and I will be responsible for AR rewards this year. I know most of you are familiar with the process, but I also wanted to reach out to all the new parents and students of our school.

Accelerated Reader is a program that the school has been using for several years now, among other things, to encourage all students to read at their own pace/level.

At the beginning of every quarter teachers set reading goals for each student. The goal is determined by the teachers often in agreement with the student/parent and can be adjusted to fit each student's unique needs. The great thing about this is that each student can work at their own pace and still feel successful for having reached their goal. After reading a book students can test on it in class on the computer. Each book they read gives them a certain amount of 'points' which count towards their goal for the quarter.

At the end of the first quarter I will pull up the results for every class. Those students who have met their goal for the first quarter will shortly thereafter receive a ribbon with a pin that states they have met their goal for that quarter. The ribbons stay in the class until the end of the year, and, at the end of each quarter I will add a new pin for every student who meets their reading goal. Usually, those ribbons will be displayed in class so that all students are motivated to try harder.

At the end of the school year there will be a small ceremony where all students who meet their goal for all four quarters will be recognized and receive a free book as an award. This year we will be changing things up a bit. In the past we have also awarded the top scorers for each grade, that is the people who gained the highest number of points. This year, instead, we will be rewarding the one class per grade that demonstrates the highest degree of participation in the program for the year. Our goal is to have the majority of our students feel excited about reading and participate in the program.

We need your help! If you think you can help out with the making of AR buttons/ribbons or assemble/distribute rewards please contact me. Also I can be reached with any questions or concerns at dstefanidis@yahoo.com. Thank you
